Like Beauty, Wellness Isn’t a Straight Line

Like beauty, wellness isn’t a straight line. It’s not one beauty trend; it’s the spin that different people place on the trend. It’s how you decide you’re going to treat yourself and your body. It’s the plan that you decide to craft and own in order to make yourself feel whole. “Wellness is the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles, that lead to a state of holistic health,” as stated by the Global Wellness Institute. The notion that you are searching and actively trying to reach a state of holistic health is crucial. It doesn’t matter how you achieve it, as long as you’re trying. Wellness practices differ across the globe, focusing not only on the body but the mind as well. The body and mind work in harmony to keep us functioning, living, and growing.

Although wellness is something that we as individuals pursue, the ways in which we achieve it are often influenced by environmental factors like who we surround ourselves with and how we were raised. Building a community that not only supports you but uplifts you, is what we, at the Sugar Beauty Bar, strive to do. Remaining static and unmotivated can have a huge effect on our overall wellness and well-being. There are many different aspects of wellness that come together to help us achieve overall holistic health.

The following are just a few dimensions of wellness. The most commonly talked about dimension is the physical. A healthy body through nutrition, sleep, exercise, and other practices can help with holistic health. This can also heal any physical obstacles that may be in the way of your wellness. Your mental health has a direct effect on other aspects of wellness, which is why it’s so important to keep it in check or make sure you’re doing what’s best for you mentally. Engaging with the world through learning, problem solving and creativity will help optimize your cognitive function and benefit your overall health. The emotional dimension focuses on feelings. How you acknowledge the feelings of others while being aware of your own, accepting them, and expressing them, is crucial in bettering your relationship with yourself and others around you.

The Spiritual dimension has a lot to do with searching. Some may call it soul searching, but all it really means is searching for a meaning or purpose in human existence. This is something that may come to people in different aspects or parts of their lives. The Social dimension revolves around interactions with others and communities. This can involve building connections and contribute to ongoing discussions or events in your community. The environmental dimension encompasses the role we as humans play in the natural environment around us, preferably to better it. When the environment around you is positive and free of hazards, it allows for a better room for growth.

When thinking about wellness, the physical and mental are always talked about but it is much larger than that. Focusing on the different dimensions that wellness encompasses instead of focusing on just two, allows for a more balanced holistic health. What are some ways in which you practice wellness? Which dimensions do they target?
