Say Goodbye to Ingrown Hairs

Why do we get ingrown hairs?

Sometimes growing hairs get trapped beneath the skin. To prevent our beautiful hairs from getting stuck under the skin, clean and exfoliate the area to create space for the hair to grow out from the skin.

Everything you need to know about Exfoliation

Exfoliation is a word so commonly used in the skincare world, defined as “the removal of the oldest dead skin cells from the skin's surface.”

Our skin rejuvenates and sheds on a regular basis. Sometimes those dead skin cells that are shedding actually cling to the skin. Over time, these dead skin cells may build up, resulting in clogged pores. This then compresses hair in follicles and sometimes creates uneven skin tone and textures.

To release the build-up of dead skincare that may clog pores and compress hair follicles, we recommend exfoliation. This is the act of buffing, shedding, and scrubbing away those dead skin cells. Mechanical exfoliation is a fancy way of saying you do all the work. Applying practices from energy work, we advise scrubbing in a counterclockwise direction to support releasing all that is no longer needed.

5 Ways to Exfoliate Smarter

1. Exfoliate every other day.

2. Pick your scrubbing agent carefully.

3. Watch your pressure.

4. Avoid fragrance.

5. Feel your body.

A Complete Guide to Dry Brushing

Dry brushing is using a bristle brush to help exfoliate and release old skin cells trapping ingrown hairs. It is also said to help improve lymph circulation.

As you dry brush your skin, notice the sensation of the bristles on your skin.

Deeply engage in this sensory experience. Notice the sound as you brush toward your heart. Do you see the small particles of dead skin cells falling to the floor of your shower?

Reflect on what you are shedding, literally and metaphorically.

How can you continue letting go of the old?

Enhance Your Exfoliating Routine

Pre-shower

Use a dry brush in a counterclockwise direction around stubborn hairs and brush toward your heart on all areas of the body.

In-shower

Scrub-a-dub with naturally exfoliating bar soap

After-shower

Hydrate the skin by applying fur oil to main areas and spot treat ingrown hairs with the fur oil ingrown hair serum

Mechanical exfoliation

This includes applying the methods of scrubbing, brushing, and buffing away dead skin cells.

When using a scrub, work the exfoliant into the skin in circular motions, this also supports circulation. Brushes are usually used dry on dry skin prior to showering, again working into the skin in circular motions and/or upward strokes. This process of mechanical exfoliation with dry brushing also helps the removal of toxins. While working with the skin in this way, it is essential to listen to your body and be aware of the pressure and gentle with delicate skin areas. When exfoliating the face, we advise manually scrubbing natural exfoliating alage gels with the hands in circular motions. If you are looking for a deeper exfoliation experience, only use tools specifically designed for delicate skin areas like the face such as konjac sponges.

Important notes- Avoid 24 hours prior to sugaring. If you have active acne breakouts, it’s best to clean the area prior and also be gentle with the skin to ensure bacteria does not spread.

Important reasons to add exfoliation to skincare routines

  • Exfoliation prevents ingrown hairs; dead skin cells block hair follicles and can force hair back under the skin forming those red inflamed bumps.

  • Exfoliating helps skincare products penetrate the skin deeper; if you are looking to get the most out of your skincare, exfoliate first! Dry skin is an extra layer, removing it creates space for skincare to penetrate the surface.

  • The overall look of skin changes; dry, uneven skin tone and texture is usually because of the dead skin that doesn’t get removed; exfoliation reveals refreshed and new skin.

  • Exfoliating creates the perfect base for sugaring whilst reducing discomfort.
