Antiperspirant vs. Deodorant: What's the Difference?

So, what’s the big deal anyway?

It’s simple. Deodorant protects against odor, while antiperspirant protects against sweat and odor. Deodorant will help keep you fresh, whereas antiperspirant also helps to control sweat, perfect if you want to avoid underarm wetness. Aluminum is the active ingredient in antiperspirant that helps reduce/eliminate sweat.

But is aluminum unsafe?

In short: No. There is no real scientific evidence that products with aluminum pose any threat to human health. However there are a few studies in recent years have theorized that aluminum-based antiperspirants may increase the risk for breast cancer.

According to the authors of these studies, most breast cancers develop in the upper outer part of the breast -- the area closest to the armpit, which is where antiperspirants are applied. The studies suggest that chemicals in antiperspirants, including aluminum, are absorbed into the skin, particularly when the skin is nicked during shaving. These studies claim that those chemicals may then interact with DNA and lead to cancerous changes in cells, or interfere with the action of the female hormone estrogen, which is known to influence the growth of breast cancer cells.

Is there a better way to stay odor free?

Yes. Natural deodorants are effective and powerful enough to eliminate odor! Making the switch is simple and super accessible today. “Going natural” or living a more holistic life is trending and gaining more popularity. Making it easy for you to find brands and companies that support that lifestyle! Clean beauty and transparency within our products is something we have always thrived on.

Ready to make the switch? We recommend trying a detox right before!

Mix equal parts of bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar into a paste and slather on your underarms. Let sit for 5-20 minutes and rise in the shower or remove with wet wash cloth.

Benefits of detoxing include; increases the effectiveness of natural deodorant, removes the buildup of antiperspirant, detoxes your body, reduces irritation from natural deodorants, and eliminates odor!
